Race for the Light Case Study

I work often with a Florida based non-profit called Lumen Vitae, which makes education accessible to  students in Haiti, and in 2022, we planned a fundraising campaign called “Race for the Light”. I was involved with the initial planning, and when the time came to design a website experience that could simplify the process for understanding the campaign, I volunteered to drive the effort. I worked over a couple weeks with a friend to design a mobile and desktop page that could quickly and clearly communicate the message.

design process

Unlike our my other projects, this one was a far more focused and specific prompt. Unlike the other experiences, which were driven more by product functionality, this one was focused on communicating concisely. There is definitely overlap in the thinking methodologies, but generally, we were more focused on formatting, typography, placement, and ordering than we were imagining interactions and functionalities.

My simple preliminary sketches.
First iteration of a lo-fi prototype.

After creating and testing these first basic wireframes and a low fidelity prototype, I put together a color scheme, logo, and typographic hierarchy which we implemented throughout the pages. In terms of content, our primary challenge was how to communicate the two overlapping race options: an in-person race and a month-long virtual race. Leaders in the organization had differing opinions on which experience should be primarily emphasized, which required balancing the opinions of various stakeholders leading to our final design.

The final Race for the Light logo which I designed.

We built high-fidelity mockups of the webpages using Figma which allowed other stakeholders to jump in and make modifications and text edits directly to the design with ease. The web development volunteers then took these designs and implemented them using Wordpress on the main site.

Yes, I used Humaans again for the illustrations - they always come in clutch.

takeaways

Being able to use design to support a cause I care about and helping to raise over $230,000 to fund education for Haitian children was incredibly rewarding. Managing the conversation between leaders, web developers, and ourselves was a new, but enlightening experience. Ultimately, I was glad to be able to use these design tools to create a cohesive and on-brand experience for users that helped us have a concrete and meaningful impact.
